Enemorta The Life Harvester | From the upcoming novel "Nymphomancer"

The cold is the first thing that comes back to me, a deep, ancient chill that has nothing to do with the Alaskan air. It is the cold of the abyss, of the space between stars, and it is the only home I have ever truly known. It is the cloak I wear as I emerge from the womb of the black spruce forest, my bare feet making no sound on the frozen moss. They call this place Talkeetna. A fragile little settlement of warm lights and warm blood, a smudge of life against the vast, indifferent white. It is a fine place to be hungry.

I am Enemorta. The Life Harvester. And I have been so very, very patient.

The forest sighs behind me, its pines whispering secrets I planted there myself a century ago. My form, for now, is a vessel of deliberate, deceptive beauty. Pale skin, like the underbelly of a winter fish, translucent enough to hint at the shadows that coil just beneath. My hair is a river of ink, a spill of night that flows down my back, catching the faint moonlight and swallowing it whole. My eyes are pits, twin voids that hold no reflection, only an infinite, patient hunger. They are the most honest part of this disguise.

But this is not my truth. This is the lure.

My truth is the thing that waits, the shadow-self that stretches and writhes just beyond the edge of mortal sight. It is a form of shifting darkness, of glowing crimson embers for eyes, of claws that can peel back the fabric of reality itself to siphon the very essence of a soul. It is the form that knows only the singular, exquisite pleasure of the feast.

And tonight, I will feast.

My gaze fixes on the beacon ahead, the source of the low thrum of life that called me from my slumber. A building garishly painted in neon—pink, purple, a sickly electric blue—pulsating like a diseased heart against the velvet-black sky. A sign flickers: *The Velvet Room*. A brothel. A temple of fleeting, desperate warmth. It is perfect. Such places are always ripe. They are hothouses of human vulnerability, where loneliness and desire are traded like currency, where the scent of sweat and perfume masks the deeper, sweeter scent of life force slowly leaking away.

I move toward it, not walking so much as flowing, a drift of shadow across the snow-dusted road. The air around me grows heavy, thick with the aura of dread I cannot—and would not—conceal. A lone raven perched on a telephone pole lets out a choked squawk and launches itself into the night, its panic a sharp, satisfying note in the silence. They always know. The beasts of the world recognize a greater predator.

I can feel them inside the brothel already. Their heartbeats are a discordant drumming against my senses. A frantic, hopeful rhythm from a young man trying to prove his worth. A slow, weary beat from a woman who has seen too many nights. A quick, nervous flutter from someone new, someone afraid. Each pulse is a story, a little flame of existence. And I am the wind.

The neon light spills onto the snow, staining it in lurid colors. I pause at the edge of the illuminated circle, a creature of absolute shadow hesitating at the edge of a campfire. The door to The Velvet Room opens, spilling out a wave of music—a cheap, tinny synth-pop song—and a burst of laughter. A man stumbles out, zipping his coat, his face flushed with alcohol and temporary satisfaction. He doesn’t see me. He is too full of his own small, human triumph.

But then his eyes adjust to the darkness, and they find me.

He freezes. His satisfaction evaporates, replaced by a primal, gut-level confusion. The human animal sensing the trap before the mind can comprehend it. His mouth opens, but no sound comes out. He sees the pale skin, the dark hair, the beautiful, sharp-angled face. A flicker of base instinct, of attraction, wars with the terror that is screaming in his hindbrain.

“You…” he breathes, the word a puff of steam in the frigid air. “You lost, sweetheart?”

I allow a smile to touch my lips. It is a cold, sharp thing, devoid of warmth. A predator’s grimace. “No,” I say, and my voice is not my own. It is a melody I have stolen from a thousand lonely dreams, a voice crafted to soothe and seduce. “Not lost. Found.”

I take a step forward, into the light. The neon pink washes over my skin, making it look like polished bone. His eyes widen. He is not a stupid man; the air is crackling now, charged with a wrongness he can feel in his teeth. But the lure is working. The beautiful, lonely woman in the Alaskan night is a story he knows, a fantasy he can understand. It overrides the terror.

“It’s cold out here,” he says, his voice gaining a little confidence. “You shouldn’t be out here alone.”

“I’m not alone now,” I reply, taking another step. I am close enough to see the pulse hammering in his throat. It is a frantic, beautiful rhythm. A frantic, beautiful meal. “You’re here.”

He grins, a weak, nervous thing. “Yeah. I am. You, uh… you work here?” He jerks his thumb back toward the brothel.

I let my head tilt, my void-black eyes holding his. He shivers, but he cannot look away. I have him. “I work… everywhere,” I whisper.

I reach out a hand, not to touch him, but to gesture toward the dark alleyway that runs alongside the building. A place of shadows and discarded things. A perfect, private dining room. “Walk with me?”

He hesitates. The fear is there, bright and sharp in his eyes. But the lure… the lure is so much stronger. The promise of something strange, something secret, something more thrilling than the transaction he just concluded inside. His vanity, his desire, his very humanity, they are all my accomplices.

“Okay,” he says, the word a surrender. “Just for a minute.”

He follows me into the alley’s mouth, the garish light from the street fading behind us, replaced by the deep, forgiving dark. The music from the brothel is muffled here, just a dull throb. The only other sound is the crunch of his boots on the icy gravel and the silent, spreading hunger of my being.

Here, away from the false light, the mask begins to thin. The air grows colder. My shadow, cast by the distant streetlamp, stretches long and wrong, its edges blurring, its shape hinting at something with too many limbs, at claws that scrape against the brick wall without making a sound.

He stops, his bravado finally crumbling. “Wait… what is—”

He never finishes.

I turn. And I let him see. Just for a moment. The beautiful woman dissolves like smoke. The shadows rush in. My form elongates, becomes a pillar of living darkness. The crimson eyes ignite, two burning coals in the shapeless void of my face. My true claws, long and wickedly sharp, emerge from the gloom.

His scream is a tiny, choked thing, strangled by sheer, absolute horror. It is the most delicious sound I have heard in a decade.

There is no need for charm now. Only hunger.

I move, a blur of utter blackness. My claws do not touch his skin; they pierce the veil of his mortal existence. I feel the connection snap into place—a cold, precise siphon. And then I drink.

His life force floods into me. It is not blood or breath, but something purer, brighter. The very energy of his being. His memories flash before me—a bitter taste of childhood disappointment, the warm burn of his first whiskey, the hollow ache of the loneliness that drove him here tonight. They are all just facets of the flavor. His vitality is a sweet, electric current, a fire that fills the endless cold inside me, if only for a little while.

He does not struggle. There is no strength left for that. He simply… empties. His eyes, wide with terror, glaze over, becoming as dull and lifeless as stones. His body sags, then crumples to the frozen ground, a husk. A shell. A thing discarded.

I withdraw, my form coalescing back into the beautiful, pale woman. A faint, warm hum vibrates through my shadow-flesh. The meal was satisfying, but small. A single, frantic little life. It has only sharpened my appetite.

I look down at the empty thing at my feet. A whisper of a smile touches my lips. So fragile. So delicious.

From inside The Velvet Room, the music swells again. Another laugh rings out, high and bright and utterly unaware. So many little flames. So many beating hearts.

I turn my back on the husk in the alley and step back toward the neon glow. The night is young. And I am still so very, very hungry. The real hunt is about to begin...

NEW BOOK RELEASE

Whispers of Wildlight

A dying man. A magical realm. A prophecy built on a lie… and a sorceress whose music could break them both.

Lewis Mithas never expected a second chance.

Born with a degenerative disease and living on borrowed time, his only escape is fantasy novels and dreams of a life he’ll never have. Until a violent crash hurls him from the brink of death… and into the realm of Asunder. There, he wakes in perfect health—strong, glowing, and worshipped as the prophesied 'Lightwaker, a legendary hero destined to save the realm from ruin.

But Lewis isn’t a warrior. He isn’t magical. And he definitely isn’t prepared to be anyone’s saviour.

His only ally is Qord, a powerful sorceress whose magic is woven through music played on a platinum flute. Cold, brilliant, and broken in ways she won’t speak of, Qord is tasked with testing Lewis’s truth. Is he a fraud—or the final hope of a dying land?

As feelings grow and danger mounts, Lewis and Qord must navigate ancient prophecies, shadow magic, and the unraveling secrets of a kingdom on the edge. Because the more Lewis remembers about his real-world life, the more he questions whether Asunder is a gift… or a beautiful illusion.

And when the truth behind the prophecy is revealed, Lewis will have to make an impossible choice:

Stay and save a world that isn’t his… or leave and lose the only woman who makes him feel alive.

Waking in Asunder is a spellbinding romantasy story perfect for fans of:
Slow-burn romance with emotional depth

New Releases & My New Newsletter

It's been a productive month for me - how about you?

I've always wanted to write a story about robots replacing humans in environments that are too dangerous for humans, like volcanoes, underground mining disasters, space collisions, etc. When I did Drone Pilot training a few years ago, I really got immersed in the reality of sending a machine into a no-go zone, and using thermal cameras to find skiers in an avalanche.  Also the viability of using Drones in law enforcement.

Inspired by this I've released a short story serial in 5 parts called "Citizen's Arrest".

This is tech billionaire Dr. Daedalus's first attempt at blending tech with law enforcement in the near future. I've also started working on the full-length novel that follows in the wake of this series and explores Daedalus's pivotal role in the origins of my universe's Police force, The Arbiters. A good friend of mine also 3D printed these most excellent miniatures so I'm painting them as added inspiration

You can see the entire series "Citizen's Arrest" on Amazon HERE

The second short story release is called "Justin Thyme & The Masters Of Disaster."

This first 5 episode serial features the Masters Of Disaster having to split their resources between 2 simultaneous crises - a deadly virus outbreak in Africa and a member of their own team being pursued by the Police in Asia.

You can get the first episode as a Kindle short read HERE

And I've also finally sorted out the Garry Miller Newsletter. Every couple of weeks I'll be sending you a short story extract, news from the War Room [my office], and special offers that I put out there from time to time.  You can sign up using the form on the right :-)

2 New Book Releases This Month!

Good news lovers of all things superhero...

Damnation Allies, my new novel is available FOR FREE!

This 50-chapter beast started as a short story I wrote back in 1988 with a dot matrix printer on green computer paper with holes down the side.

I've spent a few months developing it into a full-blown novel and I hope you like it.

The Scum is a cruel criminal gang who are terrorising the residents of Pym Park Apartments. One resident refuses to bow down to them, so they kill her for it. Unfortunately for them, her best friend is the leader of a supervillain team, and they come to tidy up the neighbourhood.

If you like vigilante justice and seeing the bad guys getting their just desserts, then you'll like this book.

Download it here: https://jonathanboss6.wixsite.com/getthenextbook

The other news is that my story about Magpie the gentlemen thief, "One For Sorrow Two For Joy" is about to go live on Amazon on paperback. It's been out on Kindle for a while but I decided it was about time there was a hard copy.

Remember that you can see all of my books to date, and sign up for the VIP newsletter, at

  https://jonathanboss6.wixsite.com/getthenextbook

And remember if you like my work, please leave me a review on Amazon as that helps feed my feverish brain to get the other 70 novels that are in the pipeline out.

Next one is Nymphomancer, the next in the Paragons Of Virtue series about the team's resident sorceress. Watch this space!

If you've read Rising Son then you'll know why Nanoose Bay is so important...

You can drive along the actual road young Geroy drives down with his parents that fateful night that changes all of their lives forever.

New Superhero Novels For Adults Book Coming Soon...

I was in my attic a few years ago and I came across a printed pile of paper on that old green-lined computer paper with the holes down the sides, printed with an Amiga dot matrix printer.

It was a short story about a tower block being terrorised by a gang called The Scum, who murder one of the residents.

Unfortunately for them, that resident has a best friend... who also happens to be the leader of a supervillain team.
She brings them in to clear up the neighbourhood, and they are waaay worse than the gang are.
Inspired by the dark little tale on YouTube "Tales From The Crypt - Blind Alleys" this story is quite bleak and all about vengeance.

It was only when I finished reading it that I realised I'd written it! And I was written in 1988.
This is the story that inspired me to start writing fiction, and I'm delighted to say after 36 years I'm finally turning it into a full blown novel.

Paragons Of Virtue Superhero Novels Update

Hi there Believers!

Been a while!

I was working hard on getting my galactic military sci fi novel "Dark Light" finished [featuring a certain muscular female alien who'll hit the streets - literally - very soon] before National Novel Writing Month in November 18, then used that to start the Arubatorosu novel [working title Samurai Soul] and that's been crawling for months.

Really challenged by this one, trying to keep the vibe of the original masked martial artist with very little to say, while once and for all telling the story of how a black youth rose to the heights of Yakuza Oyabun.

So while that continues to simmer in the stew pot, I'll give you a teaser of Book 8 by letting you see the comic strip version of the Paragons' origin story.  This was the Champions RPG game play of the Vipers' Nest scenario that came in the box, and in this scene its the Combat In Christopher Park - a battle I remember fondly from the late eighties.

Paragons Of Virtue Superhero Novels Original Strip pt 4

Here's the next instalment of the PoV strip that featured in Superhero UK - an amateur fanzine produced in the mid eighties by editor and role-playing gamer Jonathan Clark. We're talking mid 1980's...

The 2nd book in the series of superhero novels "Skin In The Game" is available on Kindle for free as part of a 5 day promotion. Hurry - expires soon! [a bit like some of the characters!]

Paragons Of Virtue Superhero Novels Original Strip pt 3

As I continue to unearth the ancient artefacts from the past that inspired the Paragons Of Virtue superhero novel series, her's the next instalment of the PoV strip that featured in Superhero UK - an amateur fanzine produced in the mid eighties by editor and role-playing gamer Jonathan Clark.

This episode features Chase [from Paragons of Virtue series book 1 SprawlBall] the melancholic SprawlBall star at the team yard, with the alien warrior Gard [from the upcoming book 3 in the series] trying on Chase's team's Slam Suit.

This is also the first time we get introduced to William de Houce, AKA Paragon, a marriage guidance counsellor who used mind persuasion powers to turn dysfunctional couples into starry-eyed teenagers.

The final scene was foreshadowing the upcoming story line - anyone in the UK exhibiting mutant powers was being exterminated by men in armoured battle-suits.

As usual  [and like most current superhero movie franchises] Jonathan was trying to cram in too many characters in too short a space, but it's fun to realise that the Paragons were a weekly group of roleplayers and the strip was trying to capture the essence of who they were.  I'm hoping that the 40-60,000 word novels give me more room to do that :-)

Let me know your thoughts.

Paragons Of Virtue Meet NaNoWriMo

It's November 23rd 2017 and the 3rd Paragons of Virtue novel is sitting at 51,000 words.

To be honest I've been working on and off on book 3 since April, but I'm using November as an excuse / justification / motivation to get it done.

Part of me thinks I cheated, cos I had the outline planned out in October.  That's why forever more October will be known as...

NASTOPLAMO

Take October. Name it “National Story Planning Month.” Whatever you’re going to do in November, you don’t have to go in blind.

NaNoWriMo, short for National Novel Writing Month, happens each year during the month of November.  Established in 1999 it encourages participants to begin writing a 50,000 word novel on November 1st to be completed by 11:59 p.m. on November 30th.

And at the moment December shall be called

NAEDYOSHIMO

December then becomes “National Edit Your Shit Month.” Or, if you need a month away from it, maybe you come back to it in January — but the point is, always come back to it.

So keep your eyes peeled for we've got a cool story about a Galactic war, Psychic powers, power and intrigue and the debut of the next paragon to hit the street.

and i do mean "hit"...

Paragons Of Virtue Superhero Novels Original Strip pt2

It's a cold, wet November night and I'm reminiscing again.

See below the second instalment of the Paragons Of Virtue comic strip that first saw daylight all the way back in 1985 in the Superhero UK fanzine.  OMG that's 32 years ago!

First there were the role-playing games, played by a fanatically loyal group of teenagers throughout high school and beyond.  Stranger Things anyone?

Then Jonathan created this comic strip as part of his fanzine.

This actually features the Yakuza Oyabun known as Albatross.  Look out for his upcoming novel where he'll be going under his Japanes name Arubatorosu.  He's also in the "SprawlBall" novel if you haven't read that yet.

Paragons Of Virtue Superhero Novels Original Comic Strip

Look what I found!

From the mid-eighties comes the first time the Paragons of Virtue superhero team appeared in comic strip form.  Drawn, written and produced by Jonathan Clark as part of the Superhero UK fanzine, this was amateurish and full of in-jokes, but it was an early attempt to turn the role-playing games into a different format that superhero enthusiasts could enjoy.

This first episode features a very drunk Fusion being confronted by his artificially intelligent suit called Spirit [cos Fusion was a drunk] and being ordered to get back to base.  We also see the high class hooker code named Bounty who's written a sign to summon him back.

All very obscure, but is was fun at the time and gives you a taste of the Paragons characters.  I'm hoping that the novels take the Paragons Of Virtue to a whole new level.
